TikTok Provides The Community Power to Decrease AI-Generated Videos in Personal Streams

The platform is rolling out a fresh option that permits them to reduce the volume of artificial intelligence-produced media appearing in their timelines. This move comes as the platform announced that it presently contains more than 1 billion AI-generated clips.

Testing and Rollout

This change is undergoing trials over the coming weeks before a widespread rollout. This development comes amid a surge in AI content, driven by emerging video-generation tools.

AI Content on Other Platforms

Studies have shown that approximately a tenth of the fastest-growing channels on another major platform only show clips produced artificially. A considerable share of this material is classified as “AI slop”, a term for poor-quality, bulk-generated content that is often absurd or dreamlike.

“We know from our community that a lot of users enjoy content produced via AI tools, including digital art to educational videos, and we want to provide users the power to increase or decrease of that, depending on their own preferences,” commented a spokesperson.

AI on the Platform

The service shared that there are now over a billion videos on its app labeled as AI-generated. Collectively, over 100 mn media items are added to the app every day, making AI content a minor portion of its total content library.

How to Adjust Settings

Users will be in a position to limit or boost the volume of artificial media they see by using the topic control feature in the platform and picking “AI-generated content”. Further subjects that currently be modified under the tool include current affairs, style, aesthetics, and dance.

AI Disclosure Rules

TikTok’s rules require content makers to tag lifelike AI-made content, and it bans harmful deepfakes of public figures or crisis events. Any realistic AI video that is not labeled can be taken down under its community policies.

Additionally, the platform will from now on apply an artificially created label to content made using its built-in AI features, or detected by an cross-platform project for recognizing content made by AI. This action is aimed to stop users from attempting to bypass the tagging system.

AI Literacy Programs

TikTok is also establishing a $2m AI literacy fund for professionals and institutions to develop learning resources about ethical AI use. This project will benefit non-profit groups dedicated to training computer science.

Content Safety Approach

TikTok has supported its safety measures, amid controversy over proposals to cut jobs for a large number of content moderators in the UK. TikTok is expected to cut hundreds of positions in its content moderation division in the UK capital, with worker representatives and online safety experts expressing worry that humans are being replaced by machine-led review.

A company official explained that people-led review would remain essential, but artificial intelligence can protect employees by eliminating the most graphic content prior to it gets reviewed by staff. TikTok stated a 76% decrease in shocking and graphic content reviewed by safety staff over the last 12 months due to the use of its AI tools.

“We think that it’s essential to combine staff and AI to ensure user safety,” the official commented. “We’ll have staff as part of that process, but we also think it’s highly necessary to limit contact with dangerous material as rapidly, which is where a lot of the machine support is making a difference process content quickly.”
