Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for an extended period when numerous of them entered the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
