Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that individuals who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People using such medications should be aware of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a return to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

The team emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Doctors believe the mode of action of the injections explains the accelerated rebound.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the jabs report a intense resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if something flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said a patient.

This challenge is worsened if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Interest

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural support.
