England and Wales Pitted in the Same Group for the 2027 World Cup Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The pool stage draw was overseen by rugby legends such as two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side and their Welsh counterparts have been drawn in the same pool for the 2027 RWC, setting up a highly-anticipated pool stage encounter in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Group F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw recalls their memorable clash in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at England's home ground played a part in the hosts' surprise early exit.

Key Group Pairings

The Irish and the Scots also share a pool together, replicating the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. In that tournament, they secured a convincing win, with their opponents unable to progress to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, who each made a strong impression as surprise packages in France, complete that Pool D.

Significantly, the winners of these two groups are kept apart from holders and world number one South Africa until the showpiece match, assuming the Springboks win their assigned pool.

Knockout Implications

If the groups play out in line with the current global standings, further leading contenders like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would also be kept apart from the likes of England and the Irish until the final.

Under those circumstances, Los Pumas would be the other top-ranked nation on the same side of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Face Major Fixture

Hosts Australia find themselves alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Group A.

The Wallabies will open the World Cup in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a blockbuster fixture aimed at jump-start the competition.

In other groups, reigning champions the Springboks have been paired with the Azzurri, Georgia and Romania. The French team are in a pool with Japan, future hosts the United States and Manu Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Argentina will face Fiji, Spain and Canada as the tournament grows to 24 teams from the 20 who took part in France.

The 2027 tournament will introduce a last-16 round for the first time in the competition's existence.

Although the victor of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the game's biggest beasts early on, they will meet the second-placed team from Group B – probably Italy – in the first knockout round.

A total of four of the remaining six pool winners will play a third-placed side from the pool stages.
